TetraSpar Demonstrator delivers impressive results on anniversary

As we enter December, METCentre is celebrating a significant milestone: the 3-year operational anniversary of the TetraSpar Demonstrator floating wind turbine.

Reviewing the performance data, we are pleased to note that TetraSpar has consistently exceeded expectations for an innovative demonstration project:

  • 2024 capacity factor: to date 54%
  • Lifetime capacity factor: 50%
  • 2024 highlight-month capacity factor, October: 73.6%
  • Recorded availability Year 3: 99.3%
  • Recorded availability Year 2: 98.3%
  • Recorded availability Year 1: 97.0%

Over three years of stable operation, the TetraSpar Demonstrator has delivered extensive and valuable data to its owners - RWE, Shell, TEPCO, and Stiesdal Offshore - and has achieved its key objectives.

These include validating the concept of a fully industrialized approach to floating wind design and demonstrating the immense potential of floating offshore wind power generation.

-This success highlights the importance of demonstration projects in advancing floating offshore wind, made possible by METCentre’s unique and unmatched testing conditions. We are proud to host the TetraSpar Demonstrator at our site, says Monica Bårdsen, Project Manager at the METCentre.

The TetraSpar foundation is a tetrahedral structure assembled from tubular steel components. It is expected to offer important competitive advantages with its potential for lean manufacturing, lean assembly and installation processes, and low material costs.

The foundation and keel were assembled using no welding at the Port of Grenaa in Denmark.

A 3.6 MW wind turbine from Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy was mounted on the foundation following launch in the harbor basin.  In July 2021 the combined structure was towed to the test site 10 kilometers off Karmøy in Norway. Here, the TetraSpar Demonstrator was commissioned and is in full operation at a water depth of 200 meters.

The TetraSpar Demonstrator was the world’s first spar foundation deployed from an ordinary shallow-water port.
