For the horizontal axis turbines the fetch recovery distance shortens, meaning the downwind turbines receive more wind. Consequently, they benefit from the turbulent layer by also achieving a higher wind speed at a certain distance from the upwind turbine. Because our turbines and wave system require a much shorter recovery distance, theory indicates we could more than double, or even triple, the output from any wind power array if the goal is to maximise array output. However, since existing arrays have cabling limits, increasing the total output by 20-40% could be a more modest goal.

First, however, we suggest testing one unit among the existing wind arrays, possibly in collaboration with Polenergia. Then, tow it in and out at intervals, and measure and validate this "best of twins" effect. For very low relative costs versus the potential gains, such a test could greatly benefit the entire North Sea wind power array.
